Three years of marriage

Today marks three years of being married to my husband, six and a half years of dating and roughly twenty-three years of knowing each other.

For those of you who do not know our story, let me share a little bit of it with you. My first memory of my husband was in the “Blue Room” in our church in preschool and it was my birthday. When you hit a certain age in preschool you got to leave the play time half way through and go out to another classroom and a teacher would teach a lesson. Dirk informed the teacher by yelling “SHE IS LYING, ITS NOT HER BIRTHDAY!!!” and I yelled right back “YES IT IS!!” and stomped out. Well, come to find out years later he lied because he didn’t want me to leave.

I remember in 5th grade when he dyed his hair half blonde like a bowl cut and all the other girls in my class were saying how horrible it looked. I verbally agreed. But secretly thought it looked cute. Or in 6th grade for the Christmas play when he was paired up with Amy as his wife while I was the angel and was desperately jealous that she got to play his wife.

We wrote each other letters all the time updating each other on life and our current crushes at the time. He lived 45 minutes away which without a car was like a lifetime. We teased each other across the pews at Day Camp and the director had to separate our groups. We always found a way to sit together on the bus to field trips from church or somehow end up next to each other on the couch at high school group. Oh and there was that one time we held hands during the 30 hour fast under a pillow. And then when we talked for 3 hours on the island up at camp and I made him late for his meeting.

I think we were in love for years but never quite realized it. We never dated all those years.

I gave him a tour of The University of Washington to try to convince him to come to school with me despite his numerous offers to play football all over the country. I never thought he would. But he did.

He broke up with his girlfriend of six years and very quickly became my best friend in the whole world. He practically lived at my house with how much he was there. And he slowly made me realize he had already stolen my heart years ago. By Drumheller fountain he asked if I wanted to take the leap and actually date him and he nicknamed me Jumper. Two and a half years later in that same spot he asked me to take another leap and marry him.  And we have just kept on jumping together.  We made the decision to leap and for me to go full time with photography basically the day we got back from our honeymoon.  And I am so excited for the next few adventures in sight!

Happy Anniversary my love.  I cannot imagine what life would be like without you in it to encourage me, support me, challenge me, go on adventures with me and love me.  I cannot wait to see what the next 60 years of adventures looks like with you by my side!
